A study from the wireless industry trade group CTIA estimates more than 327 million cell phone devices are now in service in the country.
That figure rose nine percent over the first six months of this year.
The 2010 Census says there are around 309 million people live in the U.S.
The CTIA study also shows that the amount of wireless data generated by smart phones doubled in the first half of 2011.
