PLYMOUTH — A Plymouth High School teacher found himself under a microscope after posting a snow sculpture prank on his Facebook page.
The teacher posted a picture on his personal Facebook page of a 7-foot phallus made in his front yard by two former students.
After word got around, the picture was taken off the page, only to leave school officials reviewing whether the teacher crossed a professional line.
Plymouth Community School Corp. superintendent Dan Tyree said that while there’s an acceptable use policy for Internet browsing and guidelines on how to use social media at work, there’s no policy yet for all the new social media now being used at home.
"The problem is it’s published to the world and in a professional situation there’s always a debate on whether the person was represented as a professional or a person," he said.
Tyree said the district doesn’t want to tell teachers what to do in their home life, but they’d like to give them guidelines so they don’t embarrass themselves or the school.
"Lawyers tell us to encourage teachers not to have students on their home Facebook page, but to have them on a school Facebook page so there’s a record of what was typed."
While the school will be working on an acceptable use policy for home computers, Tyree said, a thorough investigation will be conducted to decide if other policies had been violated.
