"The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me," the director said in a statement on behalf of the cast and crew of the film. "Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."
Families of the victims had not been notified by mid-afternoon Friday because there was still an active investigation at the crime scene, Aurora police said.
The wounded were being treated at five medical centers. CNN was unable to account for all 59 injured from lists provided by officials.
Police have confirmed that 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Other details, such as Holmes’ attire, were also confirmed. According to Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates, the suspect wore a ballistic helmet, tactical armor, throat guard and other protective pieces.
Oates said Holmes used an assault rifle, shotgun and Glock to carry out the shooting. They recovered another handgun from the suspect’s car.
