Sargeant Jamie Jarboe's family got the phone call Saturday every military family dreads.
"You never think it's going to be someone you know that gets hurt like that, but every soldier that goes over there has that risk," said Joe Root, Jarboe's uncle.
Root said 27-year-old Jarboe was on a foot patrol with other soldiers from his unit when bullets sprayed the group. Several of those bullets struck Jarboe in the neck.
"Everybody is hoping and praying he'll make a full recovery, but like I said he's in stable but critical condition. He was shot through the neck. They had to open up his chest he had a collapsed lung. It's a pretty horrific injury for a young man," said Root.Jarboe had surgery at a hospital in Fallujah before being flown to a German hospital, and finally to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. He can not move his legs and doctors are still examining the extent of his injuries.
Jarboe's father and mother left Indianapolis to be by his side Tuesday afternoon.
Jarboe was married to his wife Melissa February 14, just two weeks before leaving for this deployment. It's Jarboe's third time serving overseas and his uncle said Jarboe felt it was his duty to go back for another deployment.
Friends and family in Frankfort and around the country are showing their support through a Facebook page for Jarboe. The family said they are reading the page and that they appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.
