( November 15, 2012 ) Now, garden gnomes are fun, and their fame is worldwide. They are humanlike statues, usually rocking a pointy hat. In tradition, their purpose was to ward off bad stuff from a garden and the associated home. In the here and now, they are funny -- really funny. For a family seeking entertainment, they're perfect, because you can say to the kids, "Go find the gnomes," then go get a hot chocolate somewhere. Need we mention that it's cold outside right now? The Morton Arboretum's gnome hunt takes place daily in its Children's Garden. They put up a sign with directions, including how many gnomes there are to find.
