Birthplace of Elijah Lovejoy, Albion, Maine

Ardent abolitionist and martyr in the cause of freedom of the press, Elijah Parish Lovejoy was born Nov. 9, 1802, about three miles from Albion. Because of the strong anti-slavery views expressed in his newspaper, the Alton Observer, a pro-slavery mob in that Illinois town attacked the warehouse in which he had stored a new printing press. They shot Lovejoy to death and destroyed the press.
