Where has all the good R&B and soul music gone, you ask? Nowhere; you just have to search for it. You can start at The Shrine on Friday night, when Rahsaan Patterson performs. You won't find Patterson on anyone's Top Pop or Mainstream's Top Songs That All Sound Alike chart (although his music has hit the top of Billboard's Hip-Hop/R&B charts). For good reason: His effortless vocal range fronts songs that tell stories of life and love, backed by rhythms suitable for grooving. And if that hasn't sold you, the Corey Wilkes Experience will also perform.

Why go: Because you can't pass up The Shrine's impressive schedule this week, which includes Patterson's concert and the kickoff concert for the Tony Award-winning musical "Fela!" (playing at the Oriental Theatre), featuring performances by Avery Sunshine, Wilkes and others.

Reconsider: If you are looking to enjoy the show without club kids who are not familiar with live-performance etiquette.
