The Switch to DTV – How’s It Working for You?

The digital switch has come and gone for WSBT. On February 17, at midnight, we turned off our analog channel 22 (which had served us well since 1952) and switched to 100% digital. The transition has been largely a smooth one, but there have been some obstacles to overcome and some viewer questions to answer. This page is devoted to the most common ones:

I have a digital box and an antenna, but I’m not receiving 22. Why not?

On February 17 WSBT turned off our old digital transmitter and turned on our new one. Your TV or converter box is still looking for our old transmitter. You need you to rescan your converter box so it can find 22.1, 22.2 and 22.3 again. Rescanning involves going into your converter box menu with your remote, and looking for terms like Autoscan, Channel Scan, Auto Program, Channel Find or the like. Select that option and your box will search for all available channels in the market, and we’ll be among them! If you have trouble figuring out the rescan process, consult your manual or give us a call. We’ll be glad to help.

I’ve rescanned but your signal drops out sometimes.

Are you using an indoor antenna, or “rabbit ears”? If so you may have to move your antenna around to find the optimum performance. If you’ve rescanned and don’t get us at all, you may have to move your antenna several times and rescan until you find us. It’s also possible to buy an antenna “booster” at your local electronics store. This might help. We strongly recommend outside antennas for anyone having trouble with a broken or blocky picture or if they fail to get the channels they received before the transition.

If you’re using an outdoor antenna and still have trouble with our signal, you may have to go through the same process: move the antenna until you find the best position. Why is all this necessary? If an analog signal is a little weak, the picture gets “snowy” but is usually still watchable. If a digital signal gets weak, it drops out altogether.

If you’re considering upgrading your antenna, go to http://antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx to find the best choice for your area.

I’m a satellite customer, but I receive local channels over an antenna. I can’t find you.

This will also require a rescan. Depending on your satellite receiver, you may need to rescan both the satellite receiver and your Digital TV. You also may have to unplug your satellite receiver from the electrical outlet and “reboot” the receiver so that it can download a new Electronic Program Guide or EPG. It may take several attempts at rescanning your TV and Satellite receivers. You may even have to set your devices to factory default mode before rescanning. Be persistent. Some devices are stubborn and may take several rescans before locking onto our signal.

Can I still order coupons to help me buy a converter box?

Yes, you’ll have that opportunity until all stations in the country have to make the switch in June. Go to https://www.dtv2009.govor call 1-888-388-2009.
