How do I switch? What will it cost?

It’s easy to switch and, depending on the method you choose, the cost will vary from a few bucks to a few thousand. Here are your options:

Convert your current TV set

No, we don’t mean convert it to a toaster or a microwave. We mean buy a DTV converter box for your current analog television set. The converter box (some people call it a set-top box) makes WSBT and other digital signals viewable on your analog television set. The box will not make your TV digital, but when it receives a digital signal it will convert it back to analog. You’ll also be able to watch any multicast programs offered by WSBT and the other stations. The cost of a converter box? Between $50 and $70. Electronics retailers will begin selling the boxes in early 2008.

And here’s a bit of good news. Also beginning in early 2008, coupons valued at $40 each will be available to help you cover the cost of the converter boxes you need. Households will be able to apply for up to two coupons total, one coupon per box. So converting your old TV really won’t be very expensive, and the shows you receive are free! For more information on the coupon program, visit the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) website
or call 1-888-388-2009 (voice) or 1-877-530-2634 (TTY). You can also email the NTIA.

Subscribe to Cable or Satellite service or Telephone Company service provider

This is the next cheapest option, at least at the beginning. All of these services will allow you to receive DTV signals on your analog television, though at this point it's not clear what kind of upgrades these companies will be asking for you to receive their "down-converted" digital signals. Also, be sure to check that the service you choose carries all of the programs you love, from WSBT and everybody else. What will your cable/satellite/Telco bill be? It varies of course, but approximately $60 a month.

Buy a new TV with built-in digital tuner

This is the most expensive route to take at the outset, though when you see the picture you’ll probably think it’s worth it. Also, bear in mind that the TV is a one-time purchase, and if you continue to watch an over-the-air signal to your antenna, the programming is free. No monthly cable bill! So how much does a new TV with a built-in tuner cost? The technology is growing ever more sophisticated and, like computers and pocket calculators, the prices are coming down. You can buy a new HDTV set for anywhere from $750 to $4,000 and up.
