Best picture nominee: 'Amour'
The Best Picture Oscar has never gone to a foreign-language film, and it probably won't this year. Still, this quietly shattering study of what it really means to grow old together has a lot of fans (it didn't win the Cannes Palme d'Or for nothing). Its impact is undeniable, and stars Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant are perfect.
With the academy looking to skew younger in its viewership, a win here would be a major surprise. Not unwelcome, but a surprise. |
