Caskets accidentally switched at Wis. cemetery

RACINE, Wis. (AP) — The city's Graceland Cemetery tightened procedures after a family discovered that two people had been buried in the wrong graves.

Henry and Juanita Hampton learned of the switch when a headstone they purchased for Juanita's sister, Mary Jeffries of Sturtevant, was recently placed at her correct grave, not where she was buried after she died in December.

City parks director Donnie Snow confirmed the caskets with the bodies of Jeffries and another woman were mistakenly swapped, but they later were moved to the proper places.

He blamed a miscommunication between the cemetery staff and a funeral home that handled two burials at the same time. He said hearses now are received at the gates, and funeral personnel must give the identity of the deceased before proceeding.
