The times may be hard, but there is a way this spring to save big. It's all about great garage sale bargains and finds.

Jen Gaither, a mother of two in Granger, is a garage sale guru.

"My best find ever is probably a mahogany night stand and dresser,” she said. “I paid $5 for it."

Sometimes she makes some great finds.

"The book that I just bought was written by Lucy Schultz, Charles Schultz's daughter, and it's signed, so you never know what a little 50 cent book might be worth someday.”

She has saved hundreds of dollars over the years in yard sales.

"50 cent sweatshirts for play clothes, a set of skis and boots — I paid $10,” she said.

And you can unload your leftover household goods, like the Villacana family. It brought them nearly $900 last year, and they are hoping for the same or more this year.

“In this economy it's great,” said Andy Villacana. “People are struggling.”

Gaither says there are some tips that will help you become a savvy shopper.

Be early, and take a vehicle that will give you plenty of space to store purchases, because you never know what you will find.

"Take change with you because a lot of times if you’re buying children's clothes, and they are marked $1, they will take 50 cents,” said Gaither. “And make sure it's clean."
