ELKHART — With so many people out of work, we've told you how many of them are turning to food pantries for help.

Thursday a major grocery chain will do its part to help keep nutritious food on their tables.

When Tricia Davis makes a trip to the grocery store, it's not about what she wants to buy or even needs to buy. It's more about what she can buy.

“We have three kids and we try and make healthier choices, and fruits and vegetables aren't always the cheapest things to buy,” she told WSBT News. “So we really have to watch what we buy.”

That's why Martin's Super Markets is trying to help families like Tricia's. On Thursday, it's holding a one-day produce sale at all Elkhart County stores.

“Elkhart's really struggling a little bit,” said Ed Osowski of Martin’s Produce and Floral Department. “But you know we're really looking for the opportunity to make a difference over there.”

Several vendors and groups worked with Martin's to make the sale possible.

“You're asking the growers to take less, the shippers to take less, the trucking company to take less, the wholesalers to take less … and basically everybody was willing to do that,” Osowski explained.

Workers at the Martin's store at Cobblestone say they hear from regular customers every day about having to work with tight budgets and feel that this truckload produce sale will give them a boost.

“We deal with a lot of families coming in that have lost their jobs, whether it be the RV industry or others, a lot of families talking about taking their grandchildren in, their adult children in, and so I really think this has been a great thing happening,” added employee Sharon Schucker.

“My kids love apples, bananas and strawberries, so we'd love to come and stock up,” Davis said.

The one-day truckload sale will be at all seven Martin's Super Markets in Elkhart County on Thursday. Martin’s has 12 semi-trucks full of product for the sale. That's about a half million pounds of fruits and vegetables.
