It's what most kids and teens cherish — summertime! But for a lot of parents, summer can be very costly, especially finding camps and activities at an affordable price.

Luckily, there are options in Michiana for some great bargains when it comes to keeping your kids busy this summer.

"Where else can you spend $7.50 for an adult, $5.50 for a child, and have a full day of activities?" asked Marcy Dean, the Potawatomi Zoological Society director.

The Potowatomi Zoo in South Bend has a wide variety of summer camps that start at just $10.

And becoming a zoo member has some serious perks.

“Our members' picnic, which is July 18th, is an after-hours event,” said Dean. “Free food, a great time, all kinds of activities for the kids. Train rides are also free to members during that night as well."

The HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum in South Bend is another great option for summer fun. To celebrate their ninth anniversary, every ninth day of the month is free.

HealthWorks! has plenty of camps and activities all summer long that are affordable as well, with the half-day, full-day, and week-long camps ranging in price from $12 to $100.

Another option comes from The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library system. They are revving up a new program for summer called Driven to Read, where very book you read is worth points. The more points you earn, the more prizes you get.

"We all know how much reading is needed to succeed in any educational endeavor, and through the rest of your life," said Victoria Gutschenritter of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library system.

Their programs also include crafts, puppet shows, skits, movies, and art. The events are free, but you may need to register in advance for some of them.

All Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Libraries will be open on Saturdays during the summer.
