9 savings tips for grandparents with grandkids

Packing the kids off to their grandparents' instead of summer camp is one way some parents are cutting back during the recession.

Grandparents who have become the new summer destination may find it challenging to keep young kids entertained without spending a lot of money. Here are some affordable activities that shouldn't stretch budgets:

1. CHECK OUT THE LIBRARY. Some grandparents might be surprised to learn that their local libraries have free movie nights, concerts, summer reading clubs and other activities for kids. They also are a good source of DVDs and video games.

2. MUSEUM FREE DAYS. Most museums and art galleries offer free admission at least once a week.

3. STAY IN, CAMP OUT. Clear some space in the basement or backyard, pitch a tent and pull out your sleeping bags.

4. READ ALOUD. Borrow mysteries from the library and read aloud under the stars.

5. LICENSE PLATE HUNT. Scope out busy parking lots for state license plates. Keep a checklist. Try to find all of them over the summer.

6. PICNIC. Go on a picnic in the backyard.

7. INTERACT WITH NATURE. Go on a camera safari and have the kids photograph flowers, bugs and other natural elements, or have them keep nature journals.

8. TOUR YOUR LOCAL FIRE STATION. Call to make arrangements.

9. SHARE TIME ONLINE. Spend time online with them on a rainy day, perhaps at one of the following sites:

— GenerationCures.org. Offers educational games, videos and creativity challenges for tweens.

— FunBrain.com. Offers games in math, reading and science with interactive games and online books.

— Usmint.gov/kids/. The U.S. Mint's interactive site for coin-collecting kids. Features seven coin-loving animals who share their knowledge of coins with kids.
