SOUTH BEND — The rising cost of food may have some people wondering how they'll feed their families this summer. A federally funded Food Service for Children program might be able to help.

The program is regulated through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and run through local schools. It's designed to make sure kids under the age of 18 are fed.

To find out if you are eligible to receive food from one of the 26 area distribution sites, call the United Way or reach help directly by dialing 211.

United Way/211 Director Dave Sisk says the Summer Food Assistance for Kids program has been in our community for years.

"It's grown in popularity since food prices have gone up and food pantries begin to deplete their food," said Sisk.

There are 26 locations in the South Bend area where kids can get free breakfast or lunch. Most are in schools or parks.

The 211 phone number helps link local people with financial assistance, food and clothing assistance and other local social service agencies. Someone is available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
