President Barack Obama's message in Elkhart was heard across the country — local people need help. The proof can be seen at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

President and CEO Lisa Jaworski says since President Obama's comment Monday night about the Neighbors in Need program, it's gotten more than a dozen donations from across the country.

They have a map of where the donations are coming from. They already total more than $1,700.

Jaworski says some of the donations are coming with messages like: "To help my fellow Americans in Elkhart.”

“It's just a wonderful thing and it's really truly neighbors helping neighbors,” she said. “And this Neighbors in Need program that we're working with you guys on, I mean what better testimony is it to that works.”

Jaworski says the Food Bank also got calls from the BBC about the program. The broadcast company may run the story in Britain.

Many of you have already helped our Neighbors in Need by dropping off food or donating money, and our campaign continues.

WSBT-TV, WSBT Radio and the South Bend Tribune are teaming up with the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and The South West Gleaners Food Bank in St. Joseph, Michigan to help our Neighbors in Need.

You can drop off food donations in the Neighbors in Need bins at area Martin's Super Markets.

We're also making it easy with a one-day drive-in at our station on Douglas Road in Mishawaka next Monday, February 16 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you want to increase the food banks' buying power, donate cash.
