Three forums to give Berrien County residents economic survival information will be offered free of charge.

The first forum, “Weathering the Storm — Finance 101,” is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 30, at Greater Niles Senior Center, 1109 Bell Road. The forum covers the “nuts and bolts” of rebuilding credit, debt strategy, mortgages, housing and budgeting. Presenters will be from GreenPath and Michigan State University Extension.

“This is a survival series that will give families living in economic peril real, practical, common sense information that will help them endure,” Berrien County Commissioner John Klimek said in a news release.

“When you consider those listed as ‘officially’ unemployed in Michigan, those who have given up looking for work and those who have lost part-time jobs, we are facing an unemployment figure of about one worker in five," he said.

Other forum topics include food survival — healthy meals on reduced budgets, and reducing energy costs. Those forum dates will be announced later.

Klimek and the Blue Tigers Civic Action Group of the South County Democratic Club are co-sponsoring the forums.

For more information about the forums, contact Edie Minks at (269) 362-4965.
