ELKHART — An Elkhart bakery is reaching out to struggling families by giving away free baked goods by the thousands.

Bimbo Bakeries is preparing to "Celebrate the Future" this Saturday at Lundquist-Bicentennial Park. Volunteers are planning to hand out 10,000 bundles of baked goods.

“We're so excited to be able to help in this celebration and to help all of our fellow residents here in Elkhart County,” said Julie Spears, human relations manager at Bimbo Bakeries.

The bundles include bread, muffins, cookies and water donated by Martin’s Super Markets.

“Elkhart has been in the news for not all the right reasons lately,” Spears continued. “We're hoping to bring some more hope back into the community.”

Organizers need the community's help. Bimbo still needs volunteers to sort and load the food, deliver it to the park and then help distribute it.

“We have got a lot of volunteers to help us of course — our employees, some of the churches in the area,” Spears added.

In addition to the giveaway of baked goods, they also plan to hold a series of free activities for children, as well as help for those who are out of work and looking for a job.

“We're also going to have a tent that has information on how to write a resume, and actually have people there who can write a resume, and you’ll be able to walk away with a resume on a disk,” Spears explained.

“I think we're very excited as a plant,” said Bimbo Bakeries employee Kaley Hutsell. “It is a great way to help our community give back and come out and have some fun. We're here to celebrate the future with you as a community and us as a growing plant.”

The activities are from 12-5 p.m. Saturday at Elkhart's Lundquist-Bicentennial Park. Everyone's invited.
