ELKHART COUNTY -- Elkhart County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. And those who are affected say filing for benefits means waiting in long lines in the cold for hours. But thanks to one local businessman, they don't have to do that anymore.

Premier Rental Purchase in Goshen is usually closed on Sundays. But not anymore. General Manager Duane Fugate isn't necessarily open for business.

"It's just something that we need to do," said Fugate.

To help people like Phil Labar.

"Laid off at the end of October by a local manufacturer here in town," said Labar.

Many people who are unemployed head to the library to file for their benefits. But when they show up, they find a line that stretches clear out to the street.

"You basically have to sign up for a computer at the library on Saturday to get in a spot for next week. And you know it's just tough all over right now," said Labar.

But the waiting game is finally over. Fugate set up 12 computers right inside his store, making it quick and easy for people to file.

"Walked in, ten minutes, I'm done, ready to go home," said Labar.

"That's extremely important because right now my husband is disabled and so his disability isn't enough to cover everything. He just went through a second major heart surgery," said Christine Davis.

"If we get 500 people or 50 people, if we've made their lives a little easier today coming into our facility and getting online, then it's truly worth the time doing it," said Fugate.

And many say they can't thank Fugate enough.

"God bless him and keep up the good work. This is an awesome community," said Davis.

Premier Rental Purchase is open from 12 to 4 on Sundays. Fugate plans to do this at least through the winter.
