PLYMOUTH — The economy is forcing thousands of people in our area to look for work. But finding a job isn't that easy. Work One of Northern Indiana is sponsoring a series of training fairs across the area.

They provide information about programs that will help people get the jobs they want.

Only time will tell when the economy will bounce back. But that's not stopping the unemployed from getting one step ahead.

"It's a down time for them, but it's also an opportunity time for them," said Suzanne Wheeler.

Suzanne Wheeler is South Bend's Apprentice Academy director. The Academy is one of 20 area programs participating in a training fair sponsored by Work One.

"There's a group of 10 to 12 companies in South Bend that kind of stepped into this business of training. And the idea was to provide more relevant, hands-on training to individuals to better prepare them for their next job," said Wheeler.

A job is something Rick Wright is hoping for. He was laid off last October.

"I've just been collecting unemployment and doing whatever I can to put in job applications," said Wright.

Wright received training to be a tig welder, but he's not stopping there.

"I thought there was something else I could do for bettering my education, have something on my application that's better than someone else," said Wright.

Wright, like others, want to ultimately start a new career and build a brighter future.

"Yeah, I'm very grateful that people set up stuff this so I can come to one place and hit everybody at one time," said Wright.

"We're happy to be able to help and happy to be able to be a resource for people for their futures," said Wheeler.

The training fair in Plymouth was the second of five scheduled for our area.
Upcoming Job Fairs

Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Work One officials say some people could receive up to $6,000 for training. To find out if you qualify contact your local Work One office.
