MISHAWAKA — People lined up by the hundreds for a shot at a new job in Michiana today. The employment opportunities are at a new senior living community called The Hearth at Juday Creek.

The Hearth is still under construction, so the job fair was held at the Holiday Inn Express in Mishawaka

People were lined up hundreds deep to apply for nursing, food service, and housekeeping positions. Phil Nickse, the executive director of the Hearth, says he was blown away by today's turnout of job applicants.

“We were thinking 500 to 1,000 [applicants],” he said. “We weren't really sure. We just wanted to make sure we could accommodate everybody.”

Hair dresser Teresa Ferency showed up to fill out an application.

“I would like to work with the elderly,” she said. “To help them in the facility with doing their hair.”

Anquinette Moorer is a college student. She was among the droves of job seekers.

"I'm looking for a full-time job to work around my schooling," said Moorer.

Initially only 20 to 30 people are being hired. Over time, employment could climb as high as 100.
