A healthy lifestyle isn't just for you; it's something you need to keep in mind for your canine companions too.

This month, veterinarians across the country are teaming up for the first-ever National Canine Weight Check.

Pudgy pups are becoming such a problem, some animal hospitals are reaching out to dogs that are tipping the scales on the plus side.

Some clinics are offering free appointments in an Aqua Paws weight loss program.

Veterinarians say overweight dogs face the same health consequences as their human counterparts.

"They can have major arthritic problems, as they get older, in their joints,” explained veterinarian Dr. Kathryn Carlson. “They can have heart problems and lung problems."

Vets recommend that you stop feeding your pet table scraps and people food.

There are local vets that offer the Aqua Paws program.
