Clothes with built-in sun protectionJudy Fortin, CNN
New ultraviolet protection factor clothing can give you up to 50 S-P-F in the sun (WSBT photo) Summer officially begins this weekend and a bottle of sunscreen is not the only place to get protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. T-shirts, bathing suits and other clothes now come with UPF or ultraviolet protection factor. Depending on the manufacturer, it's made with chemical blockers or a tighter weave. “It’s one more defense that we have against the damaging effects of the sun,” said dermatologist Jodi Ganz. Dr. Ganz told her patients to wear sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30, but she also recommends they cover up on a sunny day. “A regular t-shirt gives you about an SPF of 6 whereas one of the sun-protected clothing pieces can give you an SPF of up to 50,” Ganz said. Sharon Doering said her kids do not even know the difference when wearing clothing with UPF. But she can feel the change. It saves her energy by not having to chase her kids down every three to four hours to put on sun block. While UPF clothing may protect against sunburn, Dr. Ganz warns her patients not to forget to give the other body parts that are still exposed a good coating of sunscreen.
