Report says breast self exams don't save livesA new report in the Cochrane Library Journal says doing self exams once a month does not improve a woman's chance of surviving breast cancer. But the report did find the monthly exams almost double a woman's risk of a biopsy. Some doctors don't agree. Dr. Brett Stephens with Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center said monthly checks are good, since doctors only see patients for breast exams once a year. “If you do your monthly self exam at the same time you will know your breast better than anyone else,” said Dr. Stephens. “You will be able to detect subtle changes that you can point out to your physician, point out to us as your mammographer, that we can pay attention to on the mammogram. If we know that the lady is feeling something, we can zero in and pinpoint that and look more closely with that either with special views, with mammogram ultrasounds and now even MRI." Dr. Stephens said if they catch the tumor before it reaches one centimeter, there's a 95 percent survival rate after 5 years. He said anything larger than that causes more problems.
