CHICAGO (AP) — A 33-year-old woman who claims she contracted HIV and hepatitis C from a kidney transplant has sued the University of Chicago Medical Center and one of its doctors.

The woman known in court papers only as Jane Doe says she should have been told that the organ donor was gay.

Her attorney, Thomas Demetrio, says the cost of her future care alone could be very significant.

Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say gay men should not be used as donors unless the patient is in danger of imminent death. And they say the patient should be told if the donor was gay.

But the suit said Jane Doe wasn't told.

A spokesman for the University of Chicago Medical Center says he has no immediate comment.
