Personnel at ophthalmologists’ offices contacted Monday said they are already taking calls from patients of Dr. Philip Gabriele.

Advanced Ophthalmology of Michiana, the South Bend Clinic, Boling Vision Center and Michiana Eye Center & Facial Plastic Surgery were already getting calls from Gabriele’s patients and were working them into their schedules.

Ophthalmologists have medical degrees, while optometrists do not.

Dr. Richard Boling, of Boling Vision Center, said his staff has scheduled an appointment this week with a woman concerned about a tumor behind her eye. She’s a former patient of Gabriele.

He said people with any sort of emergency should call an eye doctor as soon as possible.

Dr. Martyn Wills at the South Bend Clinic said the staff there will treat Gabriele’s patients as they treat their own.

“I’m sure the (medical) community is going to pitch in to help,” Wills said. “It’s such a sad thing.”

“We’re just saddened by this tragic news,” Boling said. “This is so terrible.”

“It’s such a sad thing,” Wills said.
