SOUTH BEND — Local breast cancer patients and survivors are preparing for an important event that helps women who are underinsured or without insurance still get their mammograms.

It's the eighth annual Secret Sisters Society Luncheon and Style Show. The money raised pays for mammograms women can't afford and it focuses on women in the 40-49 age range — women who often put their family’s health first, especially when the budget is tight.

"Obviously there are more women needing mammograms because they don't have access to insurance or they've lost their insurance or they have a deductible that doesn't cover screenings,” Joan Lennon of the Women’s Task Force said. “This is why it's so important that people join Secret Sisters, even if they can't come to the event, to become a member they're helping another woman."

Lennon says it gives a woman peace of mind to know she can get screened and know everything's all right.

The Style Show is Wednesday September 9. This event is even more important this year because the need is greater and the cost of mammograms has gone up thanks to improved digital technology.

Here's how it works:

You pick a friend to be your Pink Pack Pal. Then you request a Pink Pack.

You'll get a breast self-exam guide, a pen and a kitchen magnet — one for you and one for your Pink Pack Pal. We'll remind you on the 22nd of every month to call your Pink Pal and remind her to do her breast self-exam. And remember to do yours the same day. Early detection saves lives.

Become a member of the Pink Pack right away — it could save a life.
