BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A new survey of Indiana teens finds that overall drug and alcohol use is down, although marijuana smoking is slightly more common.

The annual survey by Indiana University's Indiana Prevention Resource Center says that 14.6 of high school sophomores reported this year having smoked marijuana in the previous month, up from 13.5 percent in 2008.

The report also found more marijuana use among 8th graders and high school seniors.

Center director Ruth Gassman says the rise in marijuana use merits attention but does not necessarily mean a trend.

The survey also found students saying the average age for the first use of cigarettes was 12.8 years old, 13.1 for alcohol and 13.8 for marijuana.
