LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) — A northwest Indiana county will improve access for people with disabilities under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.

LaPorte County's three-year agreement with the government includes physical changes to buildings and parks, aids to help people with hearing or sight disabilities, and public notices about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Thomas Perez says the county is committed to ensuring the civil rights provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The agreement is part of a federal initiative to bring state and local governments into compliance with that act.
