Over 35K Rubber Ducks Seized Because of Health Hazard
Despite their holiday cheer, officials say these ducks contain harmful chemicals to a child's heath. (U.S. Customs and Border Protection)
The lot of Santa, snowman, gingerbread man, reindeer and penguin decorated ducks was seized on Tuesday after a compliance investigation by Customs and Border Patrol officials found that the toys contained an excess amount of harmful chemicals.
The toys contained high levels of phthalates, which are oily, colorless liquids using in the making of vinyl and other soft and flexible plastics.
The chemical is banned from being sold, distributed or imported to the United States, especially in children's toys.
The sale value of the confiscated ducks is estimated to be about $18,500.
Over the past four years, CPSC and CBP have stopped more than 8.5 million dangerous and hazardous toys and children's products from ports across the nation.
"By seizing dangerous toys and childrens products at U.S. ports of entry, CBP and CPSC keep unsafe products off store shelves and out of consumers homes," customs officials said in a press release.
