Friday has been declared another "Air Quality Action Day" for the Indiana counties of Elkhart, LaPorte and St. Joseph;Michigan counties of Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties are also included.

Those with respiratory diseases should stay indoors as much as possible.

Tips to lower emissions which contribute to higher ozone levels:

  • Carpool
  • Mow lawns in evening
  • Turn off vehicles while waiting for trains
  • Refuel vehicles in early morning or late evening
  • Use public transportation (Free rides Thursday for Interurban Trolleys in Elkhart and Goshen)

Also, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Michiana until 8 p.m. Friday. With high heat and humidity, it will feel like it's up to 105.

If you must be outside, drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun.

Take extra care of young children and pets ~ NEVER leave them unattended in a vehicle, even if windows are partially open.

Check on family/friends/neighbors who don't have air conditioning.
