(WSBT/AP) Family and friends said a final goodbye Sunday to Olympic marathon hopeful Ryan Shay.

Hundreds attended the nearly three-hour funeral at the Harvest Barn Word of Life Church in East Jordan, Mich.

Shay's college and professional coaches delivered eulogies.

He was buried as darkness fell at a cemetery near his hometown of Central Lake. The funeral procession's route went past the fields and trees where Shay ran as a teenager.

The 28-year-old won 11 state high school running titles and was a nine-time All-America at Notre Dame.

He collapsed just five miles into the U.S. men's Olympic trials a week ago in New York City.

Shay's father says his son was diagnosed with an enlarged heart when he was 14, but had been cleared to run.

Autopsy results came back inconclusive on why he died.
