(AP) — Reaction to Michigan coach Lloyd Carr's announcement Monday that he would step down after 13 seasons:

"I feel extremely privileged to have played for one of the most respected and passionate coaches in the history of Michigan football. Coach Carr has made a lasting positive impression on me, as well as each player he coached. Although I am sad to see him go, I know his love for Michigan and his former players will never be forgotten. There was no better person to represent U-M than Coach Carr." — New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who played for Carr at Michigan from 1996-99.

"Lloyd is a great coach and a great person. He has been a real asset to college football for many years. I wish him well and wish he would have stayed." — Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

"I'm happy for him, because he's leaving on his own terms and now he can enjoy life outside of football. I'm proud to have played for him and I'm proud of him for being the role model that he has always been. He's a stand-up guy through and through. Whoever replaces him is going to have big shoes to fill." — Detroit Lions tackle Jeff Backus, who played for Carr at Michigan from 1997-2000.

"Lloyd Carr did a tremendous job in his 13 years as head coach at Michigan. His record speaks for itself: five Big Ten championships, four Rose Bowl appearances and a national championship. What's most impressive to me is the way his former players talk about him and the positive impact that he has had on their lives." — Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio.

"He meant the world to me. I love him. He was the best coach I ever had. He got the best out of me. Not only did he make me a better football player, but he made me a better person. I was torn watching the news conference today. I was sad to see him go, but also happy for him because he went out on his terms. ... He's a friend for life. He is the best man I have ever met." — Cleveland Browns tight end Aaron Shea, who played for Carr at Michigan from 1996-99.

"Coach Carr was a great coach at Michigan. As an alumnus of that school, I am happy for the things coach Carr did there." — LSU coach Les Miles.

———

"Obviously, he's a great guy, good coach, good leader. I know he did everything he had to do to put you in the best situation as possible. I think the university will hurt a little by losing him." — Buffalo Bills running back Anthony Thomas, who played for Carr at Michigan from 1997-2000.

"I just hope he stays connected with the university because he has a lot of wisdom I need to extract from him if I want this basketball program to be as successful as the football program." — First-year Michigan basketball coach John Beilein.

———

"The Big Ten is losing an outstanding football coach and college football is losing a tremendous person. I, along with the entire Iowa football family, wish Lloyd Carr the best of health and happiness in the years ahead." — Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
