CENTREVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A St. Joseph County assistant prosecutor says a 16-year-old girl was chained to her bed when she died in a fire at her southwestern Michigan home.

John McDonough said Friday the body of Calista Springer of Centreville was found in her second-floor bedroom tethered to the bunk bed she shared with her 12- and 14-year-old sisters.

The victim's 37-year-old stepmother, Marsha Springer, suffered burns to her hands and face in Wednesday morning's fire.

McDonough says the chain was similar to the kind used in a dog leash.

Anthony Springer tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that his teenage daughter had mental problems and was restrained in her bedroom at night around her midsection because of safety concerns.
