ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The schools chief in Royal Oak wants to implement random and voluntary drug testing for students in grades six through 12.

Superintendent Thomas Moline tells The Detroit News he will take the issue before the school board in May. If approved, he hopes to see it in effect by the new school year.

Under the proposed program, parents would receive a letter explaining how testing works. If the children agree, the parents would verify a signed consent form.

The district would pay the $40 testing fee, and the results would go directly to parents.

The ACLU of Michigan says drug testing not only presents legal issues, but also is a waste of time and resources.
