Indiana deaths during action in Afghanistan

The following 20 people from Indiana died as a result of action in Afghanistan or Pakistan since U.S. anti-terrorism operations began there in late 2001:

June 27 — Army Staff Sgt. Travis K. Hunsberger, 24, Goshen, killed when roadside bomb exploded while he was on patrol near Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

June 19 — Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew Francis Whitacre, 21, Bryant, among two Marines killed during combat operations in Farah Province.

June 14 — Marine Lance Cpl. Layton Bradly Crass, 22, Richmond, among four Marines killed in a roadside bomb attack in Farah Province.

March 14 — Army Staff Sgt. Collin J. Bowen, 38, a Marion native, died at Brook Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was injured Jan. 2 by a roadside bombing in Afghanistan's Khowst province in which two other soldiers were killed.

July 27, 2007 — Army Staff Sgt. William R. Fritsche, 23, Martinsville, one of two soldiers killed by small-arms fire near Kamu. Both were assigned to 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

June 16, 2007 — Army Staff Sgt. Roy P. Lewsader Jr., 36, Clinton, killed in Tarin Kowt, when his vehicle was struck by enemy fire.

Feb. 21, 2007 — Army Pfc. Jason D. Johns, 19, Frankton, died in Bagram of what the military said was a non-combat related injury.

July 5, 2006 — Indiana National Guard Sgt. Maj. Jeffery McLochlin, 45, Rochester, killed by small arms fire near the village of Orgun-e, 20 miles from Pakistan.

July 2, 2006 — Tennessee National Guard Chief Warrant Officer William Timothy Flanigan, 37, who grew up in Indianapolis, killed in a helicopter crash in Kandahar.

May 17, 2006 — Ron Zimmerman, 37, Glenwood, killed in a suicide car bomb attack while working in western Afghanistan for a private contractor on a State Department police training project.

March 12, 2006 — Army Spc. Joshua Hill, 24, Fowlerton, among four soldiers killed by a bomb while working to clear a route in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province.

June 28, 2005 — Army Sgt. Marcus V. Muralles, 33, Shelbyville, among 16 U.S. troops killed when a helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan while ferrying personnel to a battle against militants.

April 6, 2005 — Marine Sgt. James S. Lee, 26, Mount Vernon, was among 18 people killed in a helicopter crash near Ghazni, Afghanistan, which officials blamed on bad weather.

March 26, 2005 — Capt. Michael T. Fiscus, 37, Milford; Spc. Brett Hershey, 23, Indianapolis; Master Sgt. Michael Hiester, 33, Bluffton; and Spc. Norman Snyder, 19, Carlisle, killed when a land mine exploded under their Indiana National Guard vehicle near Kabul.

Jan. 3, 2005 — Army Special Forces Sgt. Jeremy Wright, 31, Shelbyville, killed during a patrol when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb near Kabul.

March 4, 2002 — Army Pfc. Matthew Commons, 21, who grew up in Indianapolis, among seven soldiers killed when two troop-carrying helicopters were fired upon by machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Jan. 9, 2002 — Sgt. Jeannette L. Winters, 25, Gary, among seven Marines killed when a refueling plane crashed in a mountainous area of Pakistan.
