GARY, Ind. (AP) — A Gary man who was part of World War II's D-Day invasion has received five medals honoring his wartime service more than 60 years after the war's end.

Eighty-four-year-old James Protho received his medals, including a WWII Victory Medal, in December. Protho's son says that when his father opened the package sent in the mail he began crying, in part because his wife, who died in 2001, could not share in his victory.

Protho had battled the military since 1945 to get the medals he earned in the war. In July, the military informed him that his war records had been recovered and his medals were on the way.

Protho says he appreciates the medals, but is frustrated by his long fight to get them.
