SOUTH BEND — A line of people waiting to get into the West Side Democratic and Civic club extended halfway down Ford Street shortly after 9:30 Monday morning.

Inside, the club’s room already was full of people and the smell of keilbasa and the sound of polka music.

Union leaders and politicians running for office at every level were working the crowd, and TV cameras of media from across the state of Indiana awaited the arrival of former President Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea.

Among those in the crowd was Pam Florey, a South Bend resident originally from Oxford, England.

She and her husband are British citizens but they’ve been political active in South Bend since moving here in 1967.

Florey, who was wearing an Obama campaign button, said she’s not sure if she is going to become an American citizen so she can vote.

"They said they’d kill us if they lost by two votes." said Florey, pointing to her husband.
