Parlak Speaks To Supporters in South Bend

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) A Berrien County restaurant owner faces a very uncertain future in this country, but he is getting some help from Capitol Hill.

Turkish immigrant Ibrahim Parlak spoke to supporters Sunday at the First Unitarian Church in South Bend. Last week he lost his latest appeal to stay in this country, meaning he could be deported at any minute.

The government says Parlak didn't disclose that he was a member of group with ties to terrorism. Now Michigan Congressman Fred Upton and Senator Carl Levin say they plan to introduce a bill that will enable him to become a U.S. citizen.

Parlak says he is grateful for the support he has received so far from his friends in the community.

“I [am] hoping it’s going to make a change in my situation, so my daughter doesn't have to worry if her father’s going to be here tomorrow or not,” he told NEWS22. “I'm hoping that this nightmare is going to be over with.”

Parlak's attorneys say he will file an appeal with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. He will also have to file a Stay of Deportation or risk Parlak being sent back to Turkey before the appeal is heard.
