SJRMC Move: South Bend Impact

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) Wednesday’s announcement does not come as a surprise for the City of South Bend.

Since St. Joseph Regional Medical Center first announced plans to move in 2002, city officials have been talking with the hospital, neighborhood groups, and the University of Notre Dame about the future of the site.

City officials hope it will eventually be reborn as a residential and retail area.

“Hopefully it will be something that bridges the downtown to Notre Dame, to the Northeast Neighborhood as we’re doing over in the Triangle and the Eddy Street area now with Notre Dame, and the East Bank area as well,” said Sharon Kendall, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of South Bend.

There is a meeting scheduled later this month. All the groups that have an interest in the future of this property will sit down and brainstorm ideas for what should happen to it in the future.
