ND reviewing appropriateness of controversial events

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) The president of Notre Dame is concerned about two controversial events on campus, and wants them radically changed or ended. Rev. John Jenkins, C.S.C., says the play “The Vagina Monologues” and the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival conflict with the University's Catholic values.

Jenkins wants to engage faculty, students and alumni in a discussion about the future of those and similar events on campus. He says it is still possible for the university to have rigorous academic discussion, without sponsoring those events.

Even though some students say they disagree with Jenkins, they welcome the discussion.

“I support academic freedom in the broadest, broadest extent of what could possibly entail,” Aine Richards told NEWS22. “I think if the students want to see ‘The Vagina Monologues’ performed on campus, then it should be.”

“The Vagina Monologues” will only be performed in a classroom setting this year, not in public. The film festival will go on as scheduled this year, but its future is uncertain.
