Notre Dame student group supports controversial programs

(WSBT/AP) A group of students at the University of Notre Dame is hoping to stop college officials from banning programs with messages that clash with traditional Christian values.

The group, called United for Free Speech, has gathered more than 1000 signatures in support of letting such programs remain at the university. It formed after university president Reverend John Jenkins, C.S.C., announced last month that he is scaling down production and barring ticket sales to the play “The Vagina Monologues”.

Jenkins also has ordered the Queer Film Festival to be renamed to avoid the perception the event is meant to promote homosexual activity. He is currently seeking student and faculty input to see whether the two events should be banned from campus all together.
