Notre Dame caught between aspirations, expectations

(WSBT/AP) A religious school official says the University of Notre Dame is torn between its educational aspirations and what some say are its Catholic responsibilities.

Rev. James Heft is the chancellor at the University of Dayton, a private Catholic college. He spoke to about 100 faculty members and students Wednesday during a forum at Notre Dame on “Academic Freedom at a Catholic University”.

A discussion about academic freedom has been taking place at Notre Dame since its president questioned whether “The Vagina Monologues” and a gay film festival should be allowed on campus. Heft says he doesn’t think the events should be permitted, but adds it’s almost impossible to construct a single policy for how all Catholic universities should deal with controversial issues.
