Members of the U.S. armed forces with known Michigan ties who have died in 2008 while supporting military operations in Iraq:

— Army Staff Sgt. Michael D. Elledge, 41, of Brownsburg, Ind., died March 17 in Baghdad from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1985. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colo.

— Army Pfc. John Thomas Bishop, 22, of Gaylord died April 23 in Golden Hills in a vehicle crash. He attended Gaylord High School. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

— Army Sgt. 1st Class Steven J. Chevalier, 35, of Flint died July 9 in Balad, Iraq, from wounds sustained when a grenade hit his patrol vehicle in Samarra. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.
