Wife of Michiana man held hostage in Iraq speaks

By Jason Brocklesby

(WSBT/AP) The wife of kidnapped Indiana businessman Jeffrey Ake is speaking out for the first time since his abduction one year ago.

Liliana Ake says she believes her husband is still alive even though there has been no word about him since two days after he was kidnapped near a water treatment plant where he was working in Iraq.

She said in a CNN interview Tuesday that she spoke by telephone with her husband's kidnappers in the weeks after he was abducted and that they demanded money. She said they told her they would kill him if she didn't cooperate.

Mrs. Ake read a statement during the interview, telling the kidnappers they must call her again to resolve the matter.

She said she decided to speak out after a year, in part because of the March 30th release of hostage Jill Carroll.
