(WSBT) A young woman from South Bend was among those killed in a plane crash near Bloomington.

24-year-old Georgina H. Joshi, a licensed pilot, was studying music at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She and four other music students were on their way back from a rehearsal in West Lafayette. They were scheduled to perform in a concert this weekend for the Lafayette Bach Chorale, a community singing group.

The single-engine Cessna crashed just a half mile short of the Monroe County Airport just before midnight. The airport reported fog at the time of the accident.

In a news conference late Friday, officials said Joshi was piloting the plane when it went into a nose dive and crashed around 11:40 Thursday night. All five people died instantly.

“It’s a tragic loss for the University family,” IU president Adam Herbert told reporters.

The plane was flying in foggy conditions when it disappeared from radar. Terre Haute Air Traffic Controllers recognized the plane and contacted Yoshi’s father, who owned it. He then called police.

Because of the dense fog, rescuers couldn’t search by air until early Friday morning. Police say they received no distress calls from the pilot, but neighbors say they heard what sounded like a plane crashing.

Investigators from the NTSB will investigate the wreckage, which was still at the scene of the crash late Friday evening. The other victims are identified as Zachary Joseph Novak, Robert Clayton Samels, Garth A. Eppley, and Chris Bates Carducci.
