(WSBT) The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged two teenagers in the weekend shooting death of a South Bend Police Officer.
Cpl. Scott Severns was shot three times during an attempted robbery late Friday night near the IUSB campus. He died early Sunday morning after suffering multiple strokes and finally slipping into a coma.
Late Monday afternoon, prosecutor Michael Dvorak announced charges against 17-year-old Jeff Finley and 18-year-old Mijell Redding. Finley, the accused shooter, is charged with murder, attempted robbery, and felony murder. Redding is charged with attempted robbery, felony murder, and assisting a criminal.
Prosecutors say police got the call Friday night at 10:45. Severns and his friend, Michelle Beelby, were in a parking lot at Clover Street and Northside Drive. Police say Severns was visiting Beelby, who lived across the street from the parking lot.
Redding confessed to police that Finley told him he had already decided that he was going to rob someone that night. Michelle Beelby told police that Finley was wearing a ski mask and shot Severns while trying to rob the officer.
Police say Severns managed to shoot Finley during the altercation. He was treated for his injuries and released from St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Both Finley and Redding are in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail. Prosecutors say they cannot seek the death penalty for Finley because he is a juvenile. They did, however, file a petition for life without the possibility of parole.
“We’ve looked at this very objectively and we believe these are appropriate charges for these very serious, heinous crimes...against truly innocent victims,” Dvorak said. “This kind of gun violence...puts all of us in our community in danger, and it’s something that we feel an obligation to prosecute to the full extent of the law.”
