(WSBT) The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged two teenagers with killing a South Bend police officer.

17-year-old Clay High School student Jeffrey Finley is charged with felony murder and attempted robbery. 18-year-old Mijell Redding is charged with felony murder, attempted robbery, and assisting a criminal.

Cpl. South Bend Police Officer Scott Severns died after he was shot three times during an apparent armed robbery attempt late Friday night in a parking lot off Clover Street near the IUSB Campus.

Finley and Redding are in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail, and appeared before a judge by video Tuesday afternoon. Finley was in a wheelchair because he’s still recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Prosecutors say Finley and Redding drove around looking for someone to rob Friday night. Police say Finley wore a ski mask and tried to hold-up Cpl. Severns and his female friend. Officers say Finley shot Severns after the two had words and Severns returned fire.

“We’ve told you in the probable cause affidavit that the young man came through the parking lot twice -- once observing this couple standing by the car and the second time with the ski mask on and the gun drawn, and opened fire on Scott Severns,” prosecutor Michael Dvorak said.

The judge set court dates for both teens Tuesday. Redding will be back in court May 5th. Finley, who said he would hire his own lawyer, will next appear May 8th.
