Red Cross offering assistance to Candlewood fire victims

MISHAWAKA — Red Cross volunteers from the St. Joseph County Chapter continue to assist victims of the fire late Friday that affected 24 apartments at Candlewood Apartments, 3902 St. Andrews Circle, Mishawaka. Sixteen units sustained major damage.

About half of the occupants were able to secure housing, and the Red Cross found temporary housing for the remainder. Red Cross has established a client Service Center at the Candlewood complex clubhouse from until 8 p.m. Saturday. If warranted, the hours of the Service Center will be extended.

The Red Cross is anticipating that relief costs will exceed $15,000, and is accepting donations to assist.

Checks may be made out to the American Red Cross and mailed to the Red Cross office, 3220 E Jefferson Blvd.,. South Bend, IN 46615, or can be dropped off at the Service Center at the Candlewood Clubhouse until 8 p.m. Saturday. Secure donations also can be made online at the Web site, www.stjoe-redcross.org. All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided free of charge.

Donations of snacks, water and other beverages that can be used at the Service Center will be accepted at the site. Individuals wanting to donate items besides financial donations are asked to call (574) 298-2285 to make sure the items can be used.
